The Royal Caledonian Curling Club (RCCC) in association with the Scottish Curling Trust and with support from Edinburgh & Lothians Health Foundation (ELHF), has launched a new initiative offering wheelchair users the chance to participate in the sport of curling.

Fortnightly curling sessions have been organised at Murrayfield Curling, Edinburgh from now until March 2015 and are open to wheelchair users in the Edinburgh and Lothian area. Participants will be able to enjoy the game of curling with the option of joining the newly formed Lothian Wheelchair Curling Club for regular sporting activity and social opportunities.

Sheila Swan, Disability Development Manager for the RCCC said, “It is clear that there is growing demand for specialist curling disciplines in Scotland and we are delighted that ELHF have chosen to support this initiative. The sport of curling is enjoyed by people of all ages and genders and is one of the few sports people of all abilities can compete together and against each other.”

The project will also up skill coaches with specialised wheelchair curling modules to help them deliver the sessions. All sessions will be run by accredited RCCC coaches.

The Royal Caledonian Curling Club is delivering this initiative on behalf of the Scottish Curling Trust which was successfully awarded the project grant by ELHF. The Trust was established in 2006 and one of its main aims is to increase accessibility to the sport and make provision for disabled people and those who are impaired to introduce them to and assist them in their enjoyment of curling.
