European Curling Championships17th – 25th November – St Gallen, Switzerlan

It was an excellent weekend for Scotland as both Team Smith (pictured, right) and Team Muirhead reached the European final. The men’s final was an incredibly high-quality contest, but Scotland couldn’t quite finish off a remarkable recovery from an early 3-0 deficit and lost 10-5 to Sweden. The game was a lot closer than the score line suggests and a silver medal is a great achievement. Team Muirhead however controlled their final and saw off Anna

Hasselborg of Sweden 6-3 to seal their second European title. The team adapted quicker to slightly changed ice conditions and a crucial double takeout by skip Eve Muirhead in the 9th end was the pick of the shots. Asham Under 17 Slam – The Baljaffray Trophy – 25th – 26th November – Greenacres Curling Rink

A dramatic final end saw Team Gallacher lift the trophy at the third Asham Under 17 Slam of the season beating Team Craik in the final 8-7. 24 teams were divided into 6 sections with the group winners heading to the high road and the runners up qualifying for the low road. Teams Craik and Gallacher won all their group games and qualified directly to the semi-finals. Team Craik controlled their semi-final against Team Jackson and a big score of 5 saw them complete a 10-1 win early. Team Gallacher edged past Team MacDiarmid with some crucial steals sealing a 4-2 win. The final saw momentum swing one way and then the other. Team Gallacher took an early 3-0 lead after 2 ends but a big score of 4 saw Team Craik retake control. The final end saw Team Gallacher 7-5 down and pushing hard for the steal. They managed to steal a 3 and take the title. The next Asham Under 17 Slam is at Forfar, from 28th-29th of December.

Nordic Junior Tour Event – 24th – 26th November, Copenhagen

On the same weekend as Teams Muirhead and Smith performed so well at the Europeans two of our RCCC Academy supported, young teams experienced their earliest European adventure. Teams Davie and Baird, as reward for their earlier success at the Asham U21 slam at Greenacres, took to the ice in the Nordic Junior Tour event presented by Foxglide. Both qualified from sections and the girls moved straight to semis, the boys followed after a big quarter final win stealing a 6 when 5 ahead already!!  Team Davie’s semi win put them in final where a really close game saw them just miss out. Team Baird’s disappointing loss in the semi where they struggled to find the weight saw them into 3/4 but a great bounce back got them onto the podium. Great experience and huge learning curve for both teams, with huge thanks to Andrew Barr for his work with Team Davie.
