Weekend Preview: 30 Sep – 2 Oct

This weekend the second event on the Scottish Curling Tour gets underway at Braehead Curling Rink where the Cardwell Garden Centre Braehead Open will take place.  The competition comprises of 32 teams with a variety of Scottish teams and a good selection of overseas competitors from all over Europe.  The competition keeps the majority of teams involved through to late Saturday evening with the quarterfinals, semi finals and final of the High Road taking place on Sunday.

The Ladies’ Branch Unders and Overs Competition will take place at Stranraer this weekend starting on Saturday morning. This competition sees two female curlers under the age of 25 competing with two female curlers over the age of 25. This year the competition is up to 12 teams with some curlers coming from as far north as Inverness. The draw can be found here.

The Swisscup is taking place in Basel this weekend where three teams from the World Class Performance Programme will compete. Teams skipped by David Murdoch, Logan Gray and Tom Brewster will all be in action. The 32 team triple knockout event hosts 2011 World Champions Team Stoughton from Canada; Brad Gushue, Niklas Edin and Thomas Ulsrud to name a few of the top teams. David Edwards, Kerry Barr, Scott Macleod and Louise Edwards will travel to Tarnby in Denmark today to compete in the European Mixed Championships which begins on Saturday 1st October.

The Scottish foursome will compete in the red group and will be faced with tough opposition from Austria, Wales, the Netherlands, Sweden, Russia, Spain, Norway and Romania in the round robin stages. The group stages of the championships come to a close on Friday afternoon followed by quarterfinals in the evening of the 7th and the semi-final and final will take place on Saturday 8th October.  For more information about the competition, go  http://emcc2011.com/
