The Scottish Curling Mixed Championship took place at Curl Aberdeen from 7th – 9th March 2014. Twelve teams took part in two sections of six teams playing a round robin format.
The final was between Kyle Smith and his team of Hannah Fleming, Billy Morton and Alice Spence (pictured right) against John Penny, Kim Brewster, Scott Macleod and Karen Barthelemy (pictured left). Team Smith took 2 in the second end to to go 2-1 ahead and had the only steal of the game in the third end with a 1 to lead by 2 shots. Both teams managed only to score 1 thereafter with hammer and the game finished with a score of 5-3 in Team Smith’s favour.
The shot of the tournament however was played by John Penny (skipping Kim Brewster’s team) in the tie-breaker game where John played an in-wick to remove a stone lying in the four foot, guarded by Team MacDonald. See John Penny’s shot here on youtube.
This secured the last semi-final place which saw David Mundell face Kim Brewster and David Edwards face Kyle Smith. Both semi final games were close with Brewster winning 6 – 5 and Smith winning 10 – 6.
Team Smith will now go on to represent Scotland at the European Mixed Championships; the venue has yet to be confirmed by the World Curling Federation.
