Team Mouat – Bruce Mouat and Gina Aitken – were crowned Scottish Curling Mixed Doubles Champions after an 8-5 win against Team Hardie – Grant Hardie and Abi Brown – in the final at intu Braehead this afternoon (Sunday 13th December).
Round robin table toppers Team Mouat saw off Team Duff – John Duff and Hailey Duff – by 6-3 in Sunday morning’s semi-final, a three in the third end making the real difference in a game that saw singles scored in all other ends. A steal for Mouat in the sixth end extended their lead and despite Duff pulling one back in the seventh they were run out of stones in the eighth for a Mouat win.
Grant Hardie and Abi Brown came up against the defending champions Lee and Judith McCleary in the other semi-final and put on a convincing display to secure their final berth. With McCleary leading 2-1 after three ends Grant Hardie had a draw for five in the fourth and although he came up short a score of four was enough to edge ahead. Team McCleary came right back after a measure for two in the fifth but it was a straight hit for two in the sixth and a steal of two in the seventh for Hardie that gave them an unassailable lead. Handshakes were offered in the eighth end as Hardie ran McCleary out of stones.
In the Scottish Curling Mixed Doubles Championship Final, Team Mouat got off to a solid start with a two in the first end. In the second, Team Hardie got one on the board, despite having the opportunity to score more.
Bruce and Gina continued as they began drawing for another two in the third and a steal of two in the fourth end gave them a 6-1 lead at the half way point – Hardie had tried to open up the house but hit his own stone and rolled out; Mouat replaced the guard making it difficult for Grant to draw in which he didn’t manage leaving the two yellow Mouat stones in scoring position.
Hardie pulled one back in the fifth but with Gina facing three red counters in the sixth end she was heavy with her draw giving Hardie a steal of three to narrow Mouat’s lead to 6-5. Mouat got back on the board in the seventh and secured the win in the eighth with another one after Abi’s attempted double run back just missed the single scoring yellow.
Bruce and Gina secured their third Scottish Curling Mixed Doubles title with a final score of 8-5.
