The first of this year’s Asham Under 14 Slams took place at Forfar Indoor Sports on Sunday 11th October with teams from as far afield as Elgin, Ayr, Kelso and Dumfries taking part alongside local representation.
The young curlers played with great skill, effort and enthusiasm throughout the round robin group games. Some were able to master the fast swinging ice conditions provided at Forfar better than others to qualify for the high and low road semi-finals. Team Mackintosh, Gallacher, Bryce and Young qualifying for the High Road and Murry, Borders Juniors, Rankin & Rowley the Low Road.
In the High Road Semi’s the experienced teams of Bryce and Gallacher had comfortable victories and progressed to the final. The Low Road Semi’s were much closer games with Rowley held on to an early lead to win to win 4-3 over Murry and Rankin coming from 2-0 to win 4-2 against Borders Juniors.
In the High Road Final Bryce stole in the first 3 ends to establish a 4 shot lead going into the last end. This was too much for the Gallacher team who could only secure one shot against the experienced Bryce team.
Team Bryce are Angus Bryce, Matthew Makenzie, Robbie McCormack, Ross Owen.
The Low Road Final between Rowley and Rankin saw Rankin take the early initiative by steeling the first 2 ends to gain a 2 shot lead. In the 3rd end Rowley scored a big 3 the take a narrow one shot lead into the last but did not have the all-important last stone advantage. Rankin used that advantage to full effect to win the 2 required for victory. Team Rankin are Jamie Rankin, Jacob Holder, Sarah Wood, Jorja Rennie.
If the skill and effort shown by all these young curlers on Sunday is anything to go by then the future of Scottish curling is in good hands. All in all an excellent days curling for these young players and their friends and families, watching from behind the glass.
