Ninety-six young curlers representing their junior clubs took to the ice at intu Braehead on Sunday 20th March to take part in the Under 13 and Under 15 RCCC Funspiel. The teams in both age categories played three games of four ends with the winner being determined by points, ends, shots up, total shots scored.
After three games Stranraer, Dumfries 1 and Dumfries 2 all topped their Under 13 sections with Lockerbie being highest second place qualifier. Scott Hyslop led his Dumfries team to a fantastic achievement by going undefeated throughout the round robin, however the Lockerbie team (Jake Hathaway, Robbie McCormack, Ben Crosbie and Robbie Graham – pictured right) skipped by Hathaway played a very strong game to win the trophy in the final.
In the Hotshots Challenge, each curler plays one draw and one take out with points awarded based on the finishing place of their stone. Each team nominates a team member to play an additional draw and a different team member to play an additional take-out with multiple points up for grabs. In the Under 13 Hotshots Challenge – for the second consecutive year – Stranraer 1 were clear winners with 54 points, led by Niall Ryder along with Robyn Munro, Robbie and Kerr Lyon (pictured left).
The Under 15 Funspiel saw Greenacres, Ayr and Dumfries all finishing top of their sections with Stranraer 1 qualifying fourth as highest second place after 3 games. The winning team was from Stranraer skipped by, Adam Cairne, Harry Hay, Matthew McCrone and Iona Irving (pictured below left), after playing a final against Dumfries.
The Under 15 Hotshots Challenge had a clear winner with Stranraer 2 winning with 60 points, the team led by Finlay Audred along with Logan Hare, Gordon Johnstone and Findlay Hare (pictured below right).
Many thanks go to umpires John McGowan and Jim Stewart, the Hotshots markers Fiona Kennedy, Jim Morrison and Norman Whitfield, intu Braehead for providing great ice, and to RCCC Vice-President Clive Thomson and Lauren Gray (Olympic Bronze Medallist and Scottish Curling Women’s Championship Silver Medallist 2015-2016) who presented the prizes.
