RCCC Skill Award Challenge Round Up

Posted on Monday, November 17, 2014 at 3:18pm

The National Skill Awards Challenge is a one day competition open to curlers who have achieved an RCCC Skill Award.  Teams consist of 4 curlers with a maximum of 10 points per team based on individual Skill Award levels rated from Red Award at One point and up to Gold award at 6 points.

Sixteen teams from all over Scotland took part and they were split over four sections and in each section they played three games of four ends with the highest up teams going forward to play in the semi-finals. On completion of the section games the top teams in the sections were Two Teams from Forfar, and Two teams from Hamilton.

All teams taking part scored at least 2 ends or more and The Dumfries team who had some very young curlers taking part were runners up in their section with 2 Victories. All Players who did not make the semi- finals were invited to take part in a Fun challenge, organised by David Jones (Dundee CDO) and assisted by Katherine Adams (One of the BYC Coaches).

Two very close semi-finals saw Forfar 2 edge past Hamilton 3 by 4 shots to 3 and the other semi-final went to a draw shot after the teams finished on 4 shots each. Hamilton 2 skip James Hair managed to get his stone closer to the button than Euan MacDiarmid who was skipping the Forfar 1 team. Forfar 1 then took on Hamilton 3 in the 3rd/4th place and went onto win the game by 5 shots to 2.

The final of the competition was played between Forfar 2 and Hamilton 2 and what a final it turned out to be.  The parents and supporters behind the glass were on the edge of their seats and applauding the excellent curling from both teams. Forfar 2 open up with a 3 at the 1st end but Hamilton 2 hit back immediately with a 1 and then a 2 against the hammer to level the score at 3 shots each. The final end saw fantastic shots being play by all players and stones finishing up almost exactly where they were supposed to.  It was looking good for Hamilton with only the skip stones to come as they had a couple of stones inside the 4ft and guarded. However James Craik, skip of Forfar 2, managed to open up the head slightly with his first stone to give his team a chance. James Hair, Skip of The Hamilton 2 side played another stone into the head and his team were still lying the shot and game. However, James did not waste any time and played his last show right on the line and with weight to tap back the Hamilton stone to pick up three shots and win the game by 6 shots to 3.

Clive Thomson, representing the RCCC, praised the standard of curling and thanked all young players and especially parents for coming along to the competition. He also thanked Judith McCleary (RCCC) for all her hard work and David Horne, the local organiser but made special of the umpire for the day;- Robin Shand.
