Winter Olympic curling medallists Eve Muirhead and David Murdoch will this week be competing for places at the Le Gruyère European Curling Championships in Switzerland later this year by way of a playoff at Dewars Centre, Perth (Scotland) from Thursday 16th to Sunday 19th October.

The European Playdowns will see four men’s teams and three women’s teams battling it out to earn the right to be Scotland’s representatives at the European Curling Championships in Champéry from 22-29 November 2014.

Ewan MacDonaldCompetition will be fierce in both groups with Murdoch’s men facing stiff opposition from former team mate Tom Brewster who skips his own line up this season and has already notched up an international title at the Swiss Cup Basel earlier this month. David Edward’s 2014 Scottish Curling Championship runners up are also on good form having won this year’s SCT Sulwath Open at Dumfries and the men’s line up is completed by three time World Champion and this year’s Scottish Champions Team Ewan MacDonald (Ewan pictured left)

Hannah FlemingEve Muirhead’s Olympic Bronze Medallists return with one change to their line-up, Sarah Reid who replaces lead Claire Hamilton after she announced her decision to move on after the 2014 Winter Games. Muirhead will be up against her alternate from Sochi and last year’s Euro campaign, Lauren Gray, who is skipping her own team this time around. Completing the womens’ challengers are 2014 Scottish Championship runners up and former Scottish Junior and World Junior Champions Team Hannah Fleming (Fleming pictured right).

The winning men’s and winning women’s teams from this event will go on to represent Scotland at the European Curling Championships. In the last ten years Scotland’s men’s and women’s teams have achieved 10 European Championship medals including 3 Gold, 4 Silver and 3 Bronze. At the 2013 European Championships Scotland’s women (Eve Muirhead, Anna Sloan, Vicki Adams, Claire Hamilton and Alternate Lauren Gray) claimed Silver medal while Scotland’s men (David Murdoch, Tom Brewster, Greg Drummond, Scott Andrews and Michael Goodfellow) took Bronze.

European Playdown games begin at 2:30pm on Thursday 16th October at Dewars Centre, Perth. The format will be a double round robin with a best of three final for both men and women. Entry is free and spectators are welcome.

Full team lists and draws can be found at European Playdowns where you can also follow progress of all games with live line scoring service.

The top seven nations at the men’s and women’s European Curling Championships will qualify for the World Curling Championships in 2015. Should Scotland achieve this the teams to represent the nation at the World Championships will be decided at the Scottish Curling Championships, Dewars Centre, Perth, 16-22 February 2015.
