Team Jackson/Whyte were crowned as the first ever Scottish Curling Junior Mixed Doubles Champions after a 7-5 win against Team Brown/Kyle – in the final at intu Braehead this afternoon (Sunday 9th April), meanwhile Team Baird/Smith took third place.
The final was contested at 2:30pm between Sophie Jackson/Ross Whyte (pictured right) and Naomi Brown/Euan Kyle. Brown/Kyle started with hammer and a cluster of red stones gave them a three in the first end, after Naomi tapped up with her last stone. In the second Naomi faced two opposition counters in the four-foot, an attempted tap-back didn’t quite make contact leaving Sophie a draw for three, her stone was a little heavy and Jackson/Whyte had to settle for two.
Jackson/Whyte had two yellows buried by the last stone of the third end – Naomi attempted a tricky hit and roll off a red corner stone, a narrow miss gave their opposition a steal of two. In the fourth Jackson/Whyte had two yellow stones counting, sandwiched between two reds – they elected to guard with their final shot. Brown/Kyle (pictured left) were able to avoid the guard and make contact with the top red – attempting a difficult tap up, although they moved the stones the Jackson/Whyte duo were again able to steal two.
There was a long discussion in the fifth before Euan’s third stone – with Brown/Kyle lying one and the chance of a difficult tap back to sit two before Sophie’s final stone. He made contact with a guard, spinning out to the back twelve, which Sophie took out. Naomi played a run-back, narrowly missing and had to settle for another loss, of one point.
The sixth end saw a massive guddle develop, with eight stones in the four-foot by the time each team was onto their final stone. Sophie played first, facing a possible four opposition counters, and was able to draw into a gap at the front of the four-foot. Naomi came down with weight to attempt to move some of the opposition stones, Brown/Kyle were able to score two, however it wasn’t enough for an extra end, bringing the final score to 7-5. Sophie and Ross are the first team to win the Scottish Curling Junior Mixed Doubles Championship.
Meanwhile the game to determine third place was played between David Baird/Mili Smith and Fay Henderson/Andrew Robson. The teams swapped singles in the first three ends, a three for Baird/Smith in the fourth would prove to be a crucial end, with David and Mili (pictured left) going on to win the game 5-3.
