Scottish University Championships
The Scottish University Championships took place from Friday 8th April till Sunday the 10thcapturing both the competitive and social nature of University sport. Sixteen teams descended upon Northwest Castle, Stranraer for what was to be the largest turnout the event had seen in recent years. The competing Universities consisted of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Robert Gordons, Dundee, Edinburgh, Heriot-Watt, West of Scotland, Napier and team All Star (made up from members of different Universities who wished to compete).
Four sections made up of four teams, followed by high and low road knockout stages guaranteed every competitor at least four games for the weekend. By the Saturday night the Semi Finals for both high and low road were decided. The High Road Semi’s saw Scott MacLeods Team All star play Colin Howden’s Heriot-watt side, whilst Grant Hardie’s Strathclyde 3 pitched up against Hamilton MacMillan’s University of West of Scotland. Both games were hard fought with Scott MacLeods all star team coming out on top on Heriot-Watt, and the University of West of Scotland ending Strathclyde’s season long undefeated record in an extra end.
The Final therefore saw two teams which had never competed in the tournament battling for the title. Team All Star was a ‘Frankenstein’ creation of players from different Universities, however due to last minute pull outs on the Friday two Stranraer academy pupils, Vicky Wright and Jodie Milroy stepped in and made up the team alongside Ian Kirkpatrick from Barony College and Scott MacLeod (Dundee University Graduate). The University of West of Scotland was made up of Gary Cannell, Ruaraidh Whyte, Vicki Adams and Hamilton MacMillan. The game came down to the wire in the last end with Team All Star one up without. Hamilton had a nose hit for his one to secure an extra end, however hit and rolled out, handing the title to Scott Macleod for the second year in a row and his team. In the low road final, Glasgow University 2 with Fraser Davidson, Gregor Lawson, Titus Mactavish and Nicky Dodds were victorious against the Strathclyde 1 side of Richard Gardner , Glenn McConnell, Ruaraidh Park and Andy Callander.
Overall, the weekend could not have gone much better. All the students had a really good time both socially and competitively, and would like to Thank North West Castle and all the staff there for doing such a good job in taking care of us.
