Curling This Week: From 20th October

Posted on Monday, October 19, 2015 at 9:23am

The Peak, Stirling will host the Stirling Wheelchair Curling International Invitation from 20th to 23rd October.

The competition will host some of the top ranked wheelchair curling teams in the world which include current world champions and 2014 Olympic silver medallists, Russia and teams from USA, Norway, Latvia, Switzerland and England. Team England are an up-and-coming team from the north east of England who have all transferred from wheelchair basketball to curling.

Representing Scotland at the competition will be Team 1 (Aileen Neilson (VS), Hugh Nibloe (S), Gregor Ewan, Robert McPherson and Angie Malone), Team 2 (John Doyle, Debbie McKenna, Daniel Cowan, Charlotte McKenna and Gill Keith)

Most international wheelchair curling events are four to six end games, but Stirling Wheelchair Curling International is unusual in that games consist of eight ends, as in the Winter Olympic Games and the World Wheelchair Curling Championship. In addition to this, there will also be umpires, time clocks during games and practice time prior to matches. This has all been done in order to provide the ideal training conditions for the up-and-coming World Wheelchair Curling Championships which will be held in Lucerne, Switzerland in February 2016.

The competition also marks the last competition in the lead up to Scotland’s crucial World Wheelchair Curling Championship Qualifier which will be held in Lohja, Finland from 7th to 12th November 2015.

Wheelchair users are warmly welcomed to the event to watch games and a try curling session will be held a week after the event at 13:00 to 14:00 at the Peak, Stirling on Sunday 28th October.
