Curling Stars Align For Go Coco Scottish Championships

The 2016 Scottish Curling Championships sponsored by Go Coco coconut water return to Perth this weekend with Scotland’s top curling stars competing for the national men’s and women’s championship titles and the right to represent Scotland at the World Curling Championships later this year.

Dewars Centre will again provide the setting for the flagship event which sees the current women’s champions and Perth’s own Eve Muirhead return to defend her title along with seven time men’s champ Ewan MacDonald (pictured below).

_70P6156Play gets underway at 1pm on Sunday 14th February with the first of two sessions featuring a strong field of ten men’s teams. Reigning champions and last weekend’s Aberdeen City Open winners Team MacDonald open their account against Scotland’s 2015 Euro representatives Team Smith while alongside them Bruce Mouat’s 2016 Scottish Junior Champions feature against Aberdeen’s Team MacLeod.

Olympic silver medallists and last year’s finalists Team Murdoch (David Murdoch pictured top photo ©Richard Gray) get their campaign underway against rising RCCC Academy stars Team Brydone and Moray Combe’s home rink take on Tom Brewster’s side, the skip no stranger to Perth himself having won the Scottish title here three years running  from 2011-13. Goldline Scottish Curling Tour regulars Hardie and Bryce pair off in the final fixture of session one.

_70P5725Eight teams will compete in the women’s championship which gets underway a day later on Monday 15th at 8:00am. Eve Muirhead’s Olympic medallists return to Perth following their silver medal success at the European Championships in November. They start their title defence against 2015 Scottish Junior finalists Team Young.

Hannah Fleming (pictured far right with 2015 Champions Team Muirhead photo ©Richard Gray) will be looking to take her team all the way this year having finished runner up in the Championship in the last three years and they open against this season’s Greeenacres Junior International winners Team K Aitken.

Scottish Curling Junior Championships Final 31.01.16Newly crowned 2016 Scottish Junior Women’s Champions Team Jackson (Sophie Jackson left photo ©Brian Battensby) take on last year’s junior champions and World Junior silver medallists Team G Aitken and completing the first round are 2015-16 Asham Under 21 Slam Champions Team Murray who face Curling Champions Tour Dumfries Challenger Series winners Team Gray.

Both men’s and women’s championships will be played out in a round robin format with the top four teams in the men’s and top three teams in the women’s qualifying for the knockout stages.

This year sees the semi-finals move to Friday night (19th Feb) and finals to Saturday (20th Feb) morning and afternoon offering excellent prime time viewing. Spectators can also Try Curling at special on ice taster sessions between scheduled sessions at the semi-finals and finals.

Entry is free for all round robin sessions and semi-finals (Sun 14th- Fri 19th Feb) with tickets now on sale for the men’s and women’s finals on Saturday 20th February at Eventbrite

BBC Sport Scotlandbbcsportscotland_box will once again be covering the event with highlights available on BBC 2 Scotland week commencing 22nd February. There will be no live streaming online for the men’s and women’s final so the only way to watch is to be there and experience the action up close!

WCF_Logo_NOV_2009The Go Coco Scottish Women’s Champions will earn the right to represent Scotland at the World Women’s Championship in Swift Current, Canada from 19-27 March while the men’s champions will wear the blue of Scotland at the World Men’s Curling Championship in Basel, Switzerland from 2-10 April.
