Coaching Updates

 Technical Coach Course Pilot

After many months of planning, the pilot of the new Technical Coach course was successfully delivered at Greenacres on the 12th & 13th April. A selected group of twelve assessors attended the course to participate and assist in the review of delivery.  It was a very intensive couple of days which challenged, inspired and informed all participants. The new course is a balance of the latest curling technical aspects, the “what to coach skills” with the latest coach delivery aspects, the “How to coach skills”. The new delivery style of active learning was enjoyable and entertaining during the classroom sessions and the amount of ice time has significantly increased to allow the coaches to put their new learning into practice. The Technical Coach will replace the old Level B coach qualification in line with the new structure and is already an exciting new pathway for coaching of curling.

A sample of some of the feedback received;
How to skills and reflection process - made me think!
Session planning and micro coaching.
Actually most of it is useful, but questioning in particular.
Observation, analysis – feedback.
The move from show and tell to empowerment. Really enjoyed all the course
Excellent to focus individual coaching skills and challenge coaches thoughts. Excellent visual presentations, scenarios provided & presenters - kept it fun and interesting - Well done!
All of it is relevant for us & a really big thank you.
Most useful was recognizing the importance of asking feedback and not just telling.
Coaching techniques are useful and up to date.
Coaching styles analysis. On ice coaching sessions & analysis. Coaching bugs - prompt to recall. Shot selection.
Self awareness. New techniques. Peer feedback. Challenging existing techniques. Expert analysis / feedback
Liked all of it!

However, much work is still to be done. The National Coaching Officer, will be busy over the summer reviewing, amending and producing all the required resources as well as submitting for UK Coaching Certificate level 2 endorsement which is a stringent but worthy process. UKCC endorsement will allow curling coaching to have a recognised qualification which will in turn assist in the recruitment of new coaches and give opportunities to those who wish to develop.

Thank you to all who have worked hard and contributed and to those who have pledged to assist in the summer.

A coaching calendar will be available in August for all courses, dates and registration forms so please keep an eye on these pages!

Further to demand the RCCC coaches jackets are back and available to order.
The jacket identifies you as a RCCC qualified coach and the style has been chosen with the demands of coaching in mind.

It’s practical - straight sided, and a good length, with a royal blue proofed fabric exterior and cosy navy light fleece lining. It bears a curling stone logo with the clear inscription “RCCC Coach” in white on the back. Your preferred first name is embroidered on the front opposite the RCCC logo.

It’s good value – The RCCC has negotiated this excellent jacket at a discounted price of £35 (inc. VAT), to current coaches plus £5.50 (Postage & Packing).

Workforce Development Plan

29/01/07
By Lynne Robertson

Behind every great athlete is a great coach. We realise how crucial the work of coaches is to the development of athletes of all levels. This is why 12 Scottish governing bodies of sport are working with sportscotland and SkillsActive on workforce development plans for coaching.

Each of the 12 sports will receive a sport-specific workforce development plan that identifies the number and qualifications of coaches, and provides information about where the coaching workforce is going over the next decade.

The Steering Group met on 26 July to review and assess the tenders submitted for the workforce development plans project and to select a consultant. After careful consideration, we have selected a consortium, consisting of John Lyle Consulting, Atlantic Sports Management and Training (ASMT) and the Carnegie Research Institute of Leeds Metropolitan University,  for the work. This consortium, led by John Lyle, will include Alan Lynn, Brian Samson (ASMT), and a research team from the CRI led by Professor Jonathan Long.  This team will bring us considerable expertise in coaching, extensive experience working with SGBs, experience conducting coaching audits and workforce development plans for SGBs and specialist research capacity.

This survey will also allow us to pinpoint areas of demand for coaching and make strategic decisions about where we direct our coaching resources.  And the result? Better trained people to support increased participation and improved performance.

So if you are involved in coaching, whether as a paid or volunteer coach or as an employer of coaches, our team will be in touch to get your input into this important project.

These surveys will ask club secretaries about coaching within their clubs, and will ask coaches for information about their coaching experience and any relevant qualifications.  Coaches and their employers will be offered the opportunity to air views on the coaching structure with Scotland and any professional development needs that individuals many have. I therefore ask that you make every effort to complete all details asked for which will assist the development of coaching Curling.

Every questionaire returned could make a difference to sport in Scotland. For more information about the coaching workforce development project, please contact Lynne Robertson, National Coaching Officer, tel 0131 333 3003 or email lynne@royalcaledonianclurlingclub.org.

New Level B Coach Assessors

A successful Level B Coach Assessor training day took place on the 10th June 2006 at Murrayfield Ice rink. 15 coaches relinquished a beautiful sunny Saturday to attend the course which was presented by Pam MacKay, Kirsty Letton and Lynne Robertson. These enthusiastic new assessors will provide a vital role in the coach education development structure. It is envisaged that the progression from a Level A to Level B coach will be smoother next season with the on ice assessments taking place at local rinks.
