Workforce Development Plan29/01/07 By Lynne Robertson Behind every great athlete is a great coach. We realise how crucial the work of coaches is to the development of athletes of all levels. This is why 12 Scottish governing bodies of sport are working with sportscotland and SkillsActive on workforce development plans for coaching. Each of the 12 sports will receive a sport-specific workforce development plan that identifies the number and qualifications of coaches, and provides information about where the coaching workforce is going over the next decade. The Steering Group met on 26 July to review and assess the tenders submitted for the workforce development plans project and to select a consultant. After careful consideration, we have selected a consortium, consisting of John Lyle Consulting, Atlantic Sports Management and Training (ASMT) and the Carnegie Research Institute of Leeds Metropolitan University, for the work. This consortium, led by John Lyle, will include Alan Lynn, Brian Samson (ASMT), and a research team from the CRI led by Professor Jonathan Long. This team will bring us considerable expertise in coaching, extensive experience working with SGBs, experience conducting coaching audits and workforce development plans for SGBs and specialist research capacity. This survey will also allow us to pinpoint areas of demand for coaching and make strategic decisions about where we direct our coaching resources. And the result? Better trained people to support increased participation and improved performance. So if you are involved in coaching, whether as a paid or volunteer coach or as an employer of coaches, our team will be in touch to get your input into this important project. These surveys will ask club secretaries about coaching within their clubs, and will ask coaches for information about their coaching experience and any relevant qualifications. Coaches and their employers will be offered the opportunity to air views on the coaching structure with Scotland and any professional development needs that individuals many have. I therefore ask that you make every effort to complete all details asked for which will assist the development of coaching Curling. Every questionaire returned could make a difference to sport in Scotland.
