Stoddart Cup League I 2009-10
The Stoddart Cup (League 1) competition was concluded on 13th December 2009 with the outcome dependent on the final games. Congratulations go to Karen and her rink of Stuart, Douglas and Bob for a fine achievement. Runners-up were Leslie's rink of Mike, Ann, Jan, Margaret & Gordon. The detailed results of the competition are contained in the results section of the website. The traditional view is now supported by an alternative presentation which shows how each rink did in its own right and an overall summary table. There is also the detailed analysis of each rinks performance with rankings.

Suttie Cup 2009-10
|
This year's Suttie Cup has been won by John Liston with his team of Pamela Anderson, Bill Findlay, Iain Hannah and Ann McLanaghan. The Liston rink came very high in the league stats with the highest shots and ends figures. John only lost one match and that was to the runner-up team skipped by Eric Tittley. Karen's crew matched Eric in matches won to be placed a very creditable third in League II. Congratulations to all in a successful competition.

McComb Rosebowl 2009-10
|
The final of the Knock-out Rosebowl was held at Murrayfield on Tuesday, 19th January 2010. In what proved to be a very one-sided affair Chris's team of John, Ann & Jan easy overcame Leslie's rink of Douglas, Brenda & Alan. Details of the results throughout the competition are in the Results section of the website.

Points Competition 2009-2010
|
The annual Points Competition was held at Kinross on Sunday 24th January 2010. Last year's winner, Stuart (scratch), led off the tournament. The rest of the playing sequence was determined by lot amongst the other 12 players attending. As you know, the lead player has least knowledge of the ice condition and Stuart played commendably well to finish in joint third place and joint runner-up in the scratch section with 31 points. Runner-up overall was the handicap section winner, Iain, with 34 points. Iain was pipped at the finishing post by the overall winner, Douglas, who earned 35 points. It will be Douglas's challenge to lead off next year's competition. Everyone who attended thoroughly enjoyed the contest and an analysis of performance is included in the results section. It is interesting to note the difference in performance between the 2 sheets used and to compare the average performance of each player position in the club with each discpline. A special mention must be given to the seconds who showed that chap 'n' lie holds no fear for them!

Pairs Competition 6 December 2009
12 players participated in this year's competition at Kinross. The morning session consisted of a round robin league, winners for the High Road final, runners-up for the Low Road final. Congratulations to Douglas & Maureen for winning a very closely fought HR final which went to the very last stones of the fifth and final end. They defeated Leslie and Ann by 4 shots to 2, although they had gone into the final end peeled at 2 shots each. The winners' reward is representation of the club in the Province Pairs championship of season 2010-11. In the Low Road final it was a 3-1 victory for Mike and Jamie over Trevor and Barbara. T & B had stepped in at the last minute as substitutes and acquitted themselves extremely well. Everyone who took part declared it an excellent competition, with enjoyment from both the curling and the socialising between games.

First Annual Christmas Bonspiel
As suggested by Irene at the 2009 AGM, the club arranged a Christmas Bonspiel. A tentative request to Stephen produced an offer of two sheets at 3pm on the Saturday before Christmas - Perfect! Suggestions are one thing, putting ideas into practice requires a considerable effort and the club extends a huge vote of thanks to Irene and her "elves" - Pam, Joan, Marjory, Maureen and Leslie. Suitably decked out in Santa hats and reindeer antlers the players took to the ice and, on the whistle, came off again. Some frantic activity at game changeover ensued but everyone got into the rhythm. Many a puzzled frown was seen as Thirds wrestled with the scoring instructions for each end. Even worse the gallery was intent in spotting infringements of the rules and misdemeanours of various kinds which were to prove costly later on. There had been concern earlier in the day that the forecast of snow would necessitate the cancellation of the bonspiel. Fortunately, although the forecast was accurate in its timing, most of the bonspielers made it to the ice rink through the blizzard. With only a slight tweak to the programme everything went very smoothly. The pre-Christmas festivities continued in the evening with a dinner, prize-giving, quiz and games at the Bay Inn. A challenging quiz prepared by John, Chris performing the Michael Miles role in a Yes/No interlude and some fascinating skill shown in eating a well known Swiss chocolate triangle continued the merriment of the day and evening. Eventually exhaustion (or something equivalent) set in and, with a special vote of thanks to Irene for leading the evening as MC, the revellers retired. (A summary of the scoring in the aftenoon can be found on the results page.)

Province League, Knockouts and Closing Bonspiel
The club experienced another challenging season in the Province league with a record of just 3 victories against Aberdour, Boreland and Broomhall. (League details can be found on the West Fife Province website). The club had a good run in the Knock-out by reaching the semi-final by defeating Bank of Scotland and inverkeithing before succumbing in a closely fought match to Boreland. The representatives in the Pairs knockout were Rob & Trevor who reached the second round. The Province Closing Bonspiel was held at Kirkcaldy Ice Rink on Wednesday 24th March 2010. Two teams represented the club playing against Aberdour and Dunfermline Ladies. With one win and one defeat the club had a good bonspiel although there were some difficulties in putting 2 teams out. Many thanks to those who made themselves available.

Friendly Matches
Inverkeithing With a winning score of 18 shots to 14 Dalgety Bay won this annual tussle with Inverkeithing on Tuesday 15th December 2009 at Kinross. The matches were tied at one game each. The Bay Quaich was presented by Barbara who noted that Dalgety Bay were delighted to gain the trophy which had been held for the last two years by Inverkeithing. Everyone agreed it had been an excellent evening of curling and were looking forward to next year's event. Boreland The Friendly was played on Saturday 20th February 2010 at Kinross in a very good spirit. The result was tied on matches but unfortunately for Dalgety Bay the shots scored was rather heavily in favour of Boreland. The shots score showed a very very slight improvement by Dalgety Bay of 16-7 compared to last year but not by much (2009 = 17-7)!! The discussion after the match suggested that there is a trophy somewhere for this match - possibly a plaque called the Otterston Trophy. If this is the case it would be good to track it down for presentation again in future fixtures as this is the oldest fixture in the Boreland calendar. Tulliallan The 2010 Friendly was played on Thursday 24th February at Kinross. The tables were turned on last year's result with Tulliallan winning both matches. Inter-Province Match This year's inter-province match was played at Kinross on Monday 22nd February against the Hercules club of the East of Fife Province. Dalgety Bay won by 6 shots to 4 in what proved to be a tightly fought match with the result not determined until a steal on the last end secured victory. Well done to the team of Ian, Mike, Bill and Leslie. 37 Club This very entertaining fixture was held at Murrayfield on Tuesday, 9th March 2010. The result was a win for DBCC with one match won and the other peeled. it was a very exciting conclusion to the peeled match with Eric managing to 'save' the result with the very last stone of the evening. When the Garbutt Trophy was presented to Karen by the 37 Club president, Jim, it was discovered that 37 Club had won this fixture for the last 7 years! Comments were made that it was about time that DBCC paid for the engraving. This we will happily do.

Claymore Bonspiel 2010 On 6th March 2010, the Club held its annual bonspiel at Kinross Ice Rink. Teams were invited from Boreland, Tulliallan, Aberdour and Dunfermline Ladies as defending champions. Boreland were obliged to withdraw and at short notice a rink was formed by Douglas Murray from Inverkeithing. Tulliallan also had difficulties forming a team and were supported by a team formed from Tulliallan and Bishopshire. DBCC are most grateful to those who turned out at relatively short notice to support our bonspiel. The result was a resounding shots victory for the guests by 34 shots to 20 and by 3 games to 1. Dunfermline Ladies (ably assisted by their partners) put up a spirited defence of the title but could not quite match the other visitors. The irony of the scoring was that the late entrants, Bishopshire and Inverkeithing, were finally separated by "shots for" since shots difference and ends could not separate them. Bishopshire proved to be the winners by a single shot and DBCC would be delighted to have them return to 'defend' their trophy. Off the ice, the evening continued with soup and sandwiches as well as a presentation of the Claymore Trophy and prizes to the winning team by President Bob. Conversation continued until it was deemed time to go home. A thoroughly enjoyable evening - here's to next year!

Kinross Closing Bonspiel
|
On Saturday, 10th April Stuart, Iain, Leslie and Maureen represented the club in the closing bonspiel at Kinross. The match was against the Stag Inn, Falkland, and a victory of 9 shots to 4 was recorded. As the basis of the bonspiel was highest shots scored this was not nearly sufficient to feature in the winner's circle.

Golf Outing 2009 and 2010
|
2010 The annual golf outing of the club will be held at Aberdour GC on Sunday, 13th June with the first tee time at 1.00pm The 2009 DBCC Golf Outing was held at Aberdour Golf Club on Sunday 24th May. We should have had 8 couples playing but one lady had to call off at the last minute and Leslie took the full responsibility of his team by himself and held off the competition remarkably well (perhaps that was because he WAS playing alone – but we’ll not mention that). The weather was reasonably good if a bit windy and everyone made it back to the clubhouse without too many bruises – from weather or partner. The deserving winners were Irene and Mike Howllet with a net 65 (obviously their handicaps will need to be reviewed next year), followed by Barbara and Stuart (73), Leslie and himself (75), Maureen and John Liston(76 bih), Ann and Trevor (76 better last 6)), Karen and Chris (76), Ian and Mike Hudspeth (77) with Pam and Bob bringing up the rear with a well fought 86 ( another couple whose handicaps will need to be reviewed again next year – this time upwards!!) Several spouses joined us in the clubhouse for the lovely meal and prize giving which were accompanied by much hilarity. Overall it was another very successful outing which was enjoyed by both the ‘good’ and the ‘bad’. Looking forward to next year’s event already and I would encourage everyone to participate in a great day.
