Potted History of the Club
|
In the spring of 1979 James Stoddart, past President of both Corstorphine and Edinburgh Curling Clubs, moved to Dalgety Bay and in due course joined Dalgety Bay Sailing Club. There he made friends with David and Joyce Suttie, members of Scotscraig Curling Club. In the long winter nights of that year they often met in the bar and talked, not much about sailing, but about the sport they each had in common -- the roaring game. The Sailing Club bar at that time was frequented not only by sailing and social members of the club, but often the Cricket Club, Squash Club and the odd golfer. The enthusiasm the three curlers had for the game obviously inspired sailors, cricketers and squash players alike. So much so that it was decided to form a club. James roped in a friend, Robin McComb, a member of Corstorphine and Broomhall Clubs and so, with four people who know a little about curling and 20 enthusiasts who had never been on the ice, Dalgety Bay Curling Club began. With Joyce as both Secretary and Treasurer the club thrived being instituted in 1981 and admitted to the RCCC in 1983. Nowadays we run up to eight leagues teams of four players each, all playing in two competitions over the winter usually on a Sunday morning, taking ice either at Kinross or at Murrayfield. The Club also fields teams in the West Fife Province League, in several friendlies against other clubs, and in competitive leagues at Murrayfield and Kinross. In the summer we have a golf outing, reflecting the interest of many of our members in that other fine Scottish game. Again, abilities range from new starts to 10 handicap golfers Read about the golf on another page. We are always keen to welcome new playing members, especially total beginners, be they squash players, sailors, odd golfers or non-sport fans of all ages! Contact one of us by email to find out when we'll next have a come and try session. We draw teams for next winter in July each year. See other pages for details. Having celebrated our Silver Anniversary in 2005 we welcome new members to help us move forward to our golden jubilee. Past members are invited to contact the past president on mike@hudspeth.plus.com
