Kinross vs Dunfermline 2010

The annual friendly games took place on Friday the 19th March.  Yet another night of tense drama and great curling.

The final result came down to the last stone of the last game with a three needed by Kinross to win overall by 1 shot.  The shot being played by Davie Clydesdale was a tap back/take out.  When the granite dust settled a measure was required and Kinross had won by about 1mm.  That is about as close as it can get.

There were a lot of measures taken after that but very much of the liquid kind.

Scottish Seniors February 2010
Kinross Curling Club had 5 representatives in the Finals, David Clydesdales' rink from 2009 of Alistair Wood, Jim Taylor and Dougie Rodger with Sandy Nelson playing for Jim Stevenson along with Willie Peterson and Willie Stevenson of Orwell.  As luck would have it the draw saw these rinks pitched against each other on Saturday afternoon.  A great game which went to last stone with Jim S having to draw the 4 foot and  being just heavy.  This meant Davie was unbeaten and Jim had to keep winning to get a play off.

In the second last section game Jim lost to Gary McFarlane, 2009 semi finalist and with Davie also winning Gary and Davie qualified.  The final game of the section, between Davie and Gary was for seeding in the semi's and who would have the pleasure of playing 2009 champion Keith Prentice.  The Clydesdale rink won a one sided game after 5 ends.

Semi Final.  Despite taking 2 at the first against the on form Butler, Davie's rink although with control couldn't close out the game and needed an extra end to reach their second final in two years.  The final again against Keith Prentice.

Final.  Without last stone at the first one poor shot from Davie's rink  saw a perfect 2 splitting the house for Prentice.  Despite pressure, ones were swapped at most ends.  Following a pick up on Alistair's last stone at the 7th Keith had a chance to almost kill the game.  He was tight and opened the house up leaving Davie a very difficult tap back on unplayed ice for a 3.  The stone drew the whole way and only a 1 was secured.  Despite taking a 1 at the last the Clydesdale rink went down 4:5.  Great effort only losing one game in the finals and gaining a second Silver medal to add to that of 2009.

Good luck to Keith Prentice and his rink representing Scotland at the world finals in Russia.

2011?

Kinross vs Orwell Bonspiel
The annual bonspiel for the Gallowhill Cup as held on Friday 11th December with the usual format of eight rinks over two sessions.  After the first session it was all to play for with Kinross just 4 shots up winning only two games.  The second half was going to be a tense affair but then who there was the Clydesdale effect!  Whilst the games on three sheets were being slugged out with Orwell winning on 2, Davie was heading for a monumental 14:1 win on sheet D.  The single was lost in the last end by which time the result overall for Kinross was a certanty.  Without that score on sheet D there would only have been 1 shot in the overall result.  The overall result was in terms of games 4:4 as John Cullens, Orwell president declared, however the scores which matter were Kinross 63, Orwell 49.  Highest up rink was David Clydesdale, Sean Clemie, Dougie Gordon and Keith McLachlan.
A great evening of curling and chat.

Edinburgh Imternational
Kinross Curling Club were well represented in the major Scottish competition.  In the main event the rink skipped by Lee McCleary with Ross McCleary at lead lost out in a very close quarter final to eventual winners and current world champions Dave Murdoch.  Lee with Robbie Stevenson (Dunfermline) at third played some of their best curling of the season.  The photo's below show some of the fun that they had.

Edinburgh International Seniors.

Congratulations to David Clydesdale and his rink of Alistair Wood, Jim Taylor and Dougie Rodgers who won the event in an all Kinross ice rink final.  The opposition skipped by Sandy Nelson (Kinross)with rink from Orwell of Willie Paterson, Willie Stevenson and Jim Brownlie had come through their section unbeaten and with Sandy a past winner may have been favorites, but youth came through in the end with Davie's rink winning by 2.  The photo's show the winning rink and some focused concentration.

Scottish Seniors Finals Hamilton
Hamilton February and it was the Scottish Seniors Championships with the winner representing Scotland in the world championships to be held in Dunedin New Zealand.  The Kinross Club rink of David Clydesdale, Alistair Wood, Jim Taylor and Douglas Rodger had reached the semis in 2008 and had qualified from Greenacres unbeaten.

In the round robin section games the rink were unbeaten and had a semi final place against the rink of Gary Mcfarlane, skipped by former Scottish champion Colin Hamilton.  That rink had put out the Henderson rink from Aberdeen, last years finalists, in the play off game.  The semi should have been all over at the 5th with a difficult hit for 4 but only a two was taken by Kinross.  The rink went down losing a single against the head.  A superb angled raised take out and roll for 2 tied up the game and down an extra end.  Alistair hogged his second guard and it could have been game over but Gary missed the hit.  Very nervy.  It all went down to last stone and susequently a measure which the Kinross rink won by about 1.5mm!!

The world champions, Keith Prentice had seen off the Forfar rink of Donnie Stark and was also unbeaten through the finals.  The final was all square at 1:1 after 3, but two bad ends saw the Kinross rink lose a 3 and a 2.  Kinross rinks do not roll over and a well worked 4 at 6th followed by a steal of 1 at the 7th saw it back to all square going down the last.  The Kinross rink had set up a good position in the 8th and Keith's rink were very very nervous.  Davies first stone drew when no one, even the oposition expected it but almost fluked a result.  Keith played a poor shot which left the Kinross rink with a tricky tap up double!  This one didn't draw and although getting to the object stone, rolled the wrong way.  Game and dream over.  Down but not out back for next year.

Am I supposed to be sweeping?
Outdoor Bonspiel Feb 09

The ice was as good as it has ever been on the outside pond, and it was possible to play on two full sheets.  Photos taken during the game are posted below.
