Area 6 Bonspiel - January 2009
Congratulations to West Lothian Province in winning the Area 6 Bonspiel.
Six teams were entered from each of the four Provinces in the Area with WL Province winning five of the six games and therefore worthy winners of the trophy.
The trophy was presented to John Irving, President of West Lothian Province who will hand it on to Abercorn CC which was the highest up rink in the winning Province.

WL Province was the only Province not to incur penalty shots for non appearance or late appearance so a big thank you is due to the club secretaries, rink organisers and of course the players.

RCCC Area 6 Newsletter - December 2008
ROYAL CALEDONIAN CURLING CLUB ( AREA 6)

                            News Update Dec 2008

Stirling Ice Rink     Ice Rink closes for good at the end of March 2009.
From then it will be staffed on a “care and
maintenance basis until disposal.   Some of the ice
preparation equipment will be transferred to the new facility with curling stones returning to Kays.
Prize-winners boards etc. will not be moving. Information from the boards will be logged and archived. Trophies will be transferred and held in a display cabinet at new Ice Rink.
Farewell events are under consideration for the closing week.    Skating and Hockey on Sat 21st March and Curling on Sat 28th March. A bonspiel will run from 10am to 10pm, with prizes, themes and entertainment. Each Club will be asked to provide one team and large Clubs two -------- Watch notice board for details.

New Ice Rink          The 27 million pound complex has finished on time
(The Peak)               and looks very impressive. There are plenty free
parking spaces . A new road from Stirling centre
should ease access problems at busy times. New stones
have been purchased by Active Stirling.

Curling times have still to be fixed and will depend on the demand received. As a guide, if we base demand for evening ice on an average of the last five years at Stirling.(and 27 week season) then two evening sessions would be required ,with three sessions twice a week for 20 weeks. With all-year ice, the season could start two weeks earlier and finish two weeks later, in which case the need for late sessions would be negated.
Perhaps Clubs could provide feedback on their preference ie :- extend season with two evening sessions (say 6.15 and 8.30pm) or retain 27 week season with the occasional three evening sessions(say                                6, 8 and 10pm).

Please be aware that that next seasons ice requirements
for each club should be sent to – Active Stirling Ltd.
Forthbank Leisure Stadium, Springkerse, FK7 7UJ and
be submitted by 31st April 2009Note Active Stirling
will be writing to each Club in the next few days
 requesting ice bookings.

Coaching                   Coaching facilities at Stirling are excellent though
 limited by ice availability.
Young Curlers from 8-16 years have a Saturday morning session from 8.45 to 11am . Margaret Mauchline runs this session ably assisted by many coaches and helpers.
Adult beginners have block courses and then on to local Clubs or “Virtual Club”. The Virtual Club offers beginners the opportunity to improve ,with help of coaches, giving them confidence to join an existing Club. At present a Wednesday morning Virtual Club is thriving and an evening Club will be formed in the future. Any beginner can join at any time. Contact Logan Gray for details.
Improvers can have one to one or group coaching for all standards– who could not improve. Contact Logan Grey
Master Classes are run by the Royal Club at various
venues. These are intended for all standards of Curlers
and give a chance to learn the “trade secrets” from top
players. See RCCC web site for details.

Clubs with ideas and sources of funding. This can be
borrowed by any Club --- Contact John Bateman Ice

Swiss Tour results
During a most enjoyable afternnon and evening at Stirling Ice Rink on 8 November 2004 West Lothian Province, along with Stirlingshire province, acquitted themselves well by winning both of their Games.

The two teams, skipped by Ian Keron of Oatridge and Jim Arkley of Abercorn, won comfortably over their opponents, setting up a rousing celebration in the bar during and after the meal.

Full results, and hopefully Photographs, will follow.

Game at Stirling must start at 3 pm so local teams should be ready for curling by 2.30 pm.

After a dram, the curlers will be piped on to the ice.

Curlers should know the procedure of walking behind their flag up the centre of the ice and then fanning out to the extremities of the rink and walking down level with the piper.

Games are of 8 ends.

Winners are determined by shots up.

Visitors have the hammer in the first end.

Local teams will play stone colours at bottom of board at both rinks i.e. white or yellow.

It is customary that each local curler presents his opposite number with a Club Badge and Province Badge where these exist.

All local curlers are expected to participate in the meals.     Price is based on this.

At Stirling the meal will start about 6 pm.

There will be 5 tables of 8 for the 5 games and 2 other tables for extra tourists and officials.

One bottle of red and one of white wine will be on each table.

Additional drinks will need to be bought by players.

In theory, the bus leaves for Forest Hills at 8 pm but this will depend on how the evening goes.

Good news – the RCCC are paying for the Brochure and the badge, which each local curler will receive, is costing only £3.50.

The final cost per curler will be £26 at Stirling

It is hoped that Clubs and Provinces [or Tour Funds] will subsidise curlers.

Area 6 is paying £20 towards each sheet of ice at each rink - £180 in total.
